From 2009 to 2010, Excel Environmental Resources conducted an investigation of the Aeromarine landfill on behalf of the Borough of Keyport. As part of that work, Princeton Hydro, LLC prepared a Baseline Ecological Evaluation (BEE) examining potential impacts to nearby waterways and ecosystems. The excerpts below highlight key findings from these reports.

Contaminants Exist
Excel's soil gas testing detected methane throughout the landfill and identified elevated concentrations of benzene, vinyl chloride, and other volatile chemicals. The report stated that the findings were consistent with a landfill that had not been properly closed and where waste remained highly concentrated beneath the surface.
Several of the contaminants detected exceeded NJDEP Soil Gas Screening Levels. For example, the highest benzene concentration detected (1,086 µg/m³) was approximately 68 times higher than NJDEP's residential soil gas screening level of 16 µg/m³.

Excel found arsenic, vanadium, and PCBs in soil above the soil remediation standard, and multiple contaminants, including benzene, arsenic, and lead, in groundwater above groundwater quality standards. The report proposed engineering controls for soil contamination and a Classification Exception Area to address groundwater contamination.

Multiple metals were found in soil at concentrations above ecological screening levels. Elevated metal concentrations were found across the site and persisted to depths of at least 25 feet below the surface.

Potential Pathways Exist
Excel identified the site's stormwater system as a potential pathway to the Chingarora Creek. One stormwater grate was reported to discharge directly into the creek.

Princeton Hydro identified eroded soil and groundwater movement as potential pathways for contaminants to reach Raritan Bay and Chingarora Creek. The report concluded that ecological risks from groundwater were likely negligible.
